Lamego is renowned for its vibrant festivals and pilgrimages, deeply rooted in the city's history and culture for centuries. From the iconic Romaria dos Remédios to the traditional Lazarim Carnival, and even more contemporary events like the ZigurFest music festival, the city celebrates its heritage with joy and creativity.
Every September, Lamego hosts Portugal’s largest pilgrimage in honour of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Highlights of this grand celebration include the Procession of Triumph, where religious floats are pulled by oxen, the Marcha Luminosa (Luminous March), and the spectacular Battle of the Flowers. The 8th of September is a municipal holiday, marking the peak of the festivities.
This ancient tradition takes over the narrow streets of the small village of Lazarim, attracting thousands of visitors. The spotlight is on the caretos – traditional wooden masks, intricately carved by local artisans dedicated to preserving the historical memory of the region. The main celebration takes place on Shrove Tuesday, marking one of the most authentic and unique carnivals in Portugal.
